Double brokering is the unauthorized re-brokering of a freight load by a carrier or fraudulent intermediary, exposing the original broker and shipper to theft, unpaid carriers, and insurance gaps.
How double brokering works
A bad actor accepts a load while posing as a legitimate carrier, then re-posts it and hires another carrier to haul it — often keeping the payment and leaving the actual carrier unpaid. The original broker may not know the load changed hands until a payment demand or cargo claim arrives.
Strong carrier vetting, contact verification, and continuous authority monitoring are the core defenses. Any mismatch between a carrier’s registered authority and the person booking the load should stop the tender.
